Abstract:
This study examines the socio-economic contributions of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society as a faith-based institution promoting welfare, poverty reduction, and community development in Abuja Municipal Area Council and its surrounding. The study adopts a qualitative research approach, relying on both primary and secondary sources, including interviews, organisational records, official reports, media publications, and relevant scholarly literature. Findings reveal that Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has evolved beyond its traditional religious role into a multipurpose institution that integrates spiritual guidance with humanitarian services and socio-economic interventions. Through programmes such as the Food Bank initiative, humanitarian relief services, economic empowerment schemes, and zakat and waqf-based interventions, the Society has provided support to widows, orphans, internally displaced persons, and low-income households. The study further shows that these chain of programmes have been instrumental in reducing hunger and stabilized household welfare, empowering women, increased household income, and encouraged grassroots enterprise development. Beyond material welfare, the Society’s inclusive outreach has also promoted peaceful coexistence and interfaith tolerance across communities. The study concludes that Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has significantly complemented government welfare responsibilities and improved the livelihoods of vulnerable populations. It recommends stronger partnerships between faith-based organisations, government agencies, and private stakeholders to expand the developmental impact of such community-based initiatives in Nigeria.
